Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera says that families of fishermen who were killed due to stormy weather conditions earlier this month should be paid more compensation.
Jayasekera says that the Rs. 100,000 compensation paid to each family was insufficient.
He pointed out that the loss of bread winners of many families would need more than Rs. 100,000 for their survival.
Meanwhile, Fisheries Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has said in response that it would have been better if the government was able to pay more compensation.
However, he has noted that the families of the dead fishermen are being assisted by the government in other ways.
According to Dr. Senaratne, the government would pay compensation to each vessel that was destroyed or lost in the mid sea crisis.
