The government has decided to procure a vessel at the beginning of the next year to survey Bangladesh’s fishery resources.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas says the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and Malaysia have financed the $1.2 billion ship.

“Bangladesh has legally achieved an 111,636 square kilometre sea boundary which is rich in fishery and mineral resources. This ship is being bought to survey the resources, he said at a programme in the port city on Tuesday.

According to him, two Russian survey vessels procured by the first government of Bangladesh had become unusable in the absence of skilled manpower.

“We have inked agreements with Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Norway to create skilled manpower through proper training, Biswas said.
