A China-based fishing company with stakes in Fiji says it’s willing to be part of efforts to stop illegal fishing in the Pacific.

Shanghai Fisheries General Corporation owns about 20 per cent shares in Golden Ocean Fiji – a tuna processing and exporting factory in Suva.

Shanghai Fisheries Manager International Cooperation Duan Junheng recently told a Pacific media delegation that they’re committed to long term sustainable fishing in the region.

Duan says they will work with any government that wants to come up with a reporting system to catch illegal fishing vessels.

He says their vessels have never been cited as they always operate within the licenses.

Most of the fishing trawlers owned by Shanghai Fisheries use Fiji as their base and Duan says their catch is off-loaded here.

The company says it has internal management systems which prevent any over-fishing so that tuna stocks remain at a sustainable level.
