Senegal is planning to fine Russia’s Oleg Naidyonov trawler, which was seized off its coast, for illegal fishing and detain its cargo, Senegalese Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister Haidar el-Ali said on Sunday.

He explained that the vessel had been fishing “fraudulently, without any authorization in Senegalese waters.

The trawler is currently “in the hands of the Senegalese government, under the control of the national navy and the national police,” the minister said.

Senegal can seize both the ship and its cargo and impose a 305,000-euro fine which may be doubled to 610,000 euros, considering that the Oleg Naidyonov is a repeat offender, Haidar said.
