Vietnam officially launched a maritime surveillance force tasked with patrolling and protecting the country’s territorial waters.
The new Vietnam Fisheries Resources Surveillance will have its main headquarters in Hanoi and four divisions across the country.
The force’s key tasks include patrolling the country’s waters, monitoring and inspecting fishing activities as well as detecting and addressing violations that occur in the country’s territorial waters.
It will also assist fishermen in their operations, protect the country’s aquatic resources and maintain the country’s maritime security.
During a launch ceremony held in Da Nang April 15, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said Vietnam is home to around 120,000 fishing vessels and around one million fishermen.
He also ordered the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to submit a master development plan for the force through 2020.
