Data from a new electronic monitoring system to check the catches of tuna boats in the Pacific is is being analysed after an 80 day trial on two boats that operate out of Fiji.
The boats are back at sea catching tuna with the new equipment while video and GPS information from the first trial is being studied by two experienced fishing observers.
The main aim of the project is to investigate the viability of “E-Monitoring” as a means of providing timely, comprehensive and accurate information on-board tuna fishing vessels in situations that make it difficult to use a fisheries observer.
Malo Hosken, the Regional Electronic Reporting Coordinator and consultant to the Secretariat of the Pacific Community is overseeing the trial.
