The marine police detained 28 Vietnamese fishermen and seized two fishing vessels in a operation in the waters off Pulau Tinggi, Mersing on Saturday night.

Marine Operation Force Region 2 (Johor) commander Assistant Commissioner Paul Khiu Khon Chiang said the fishermen were detained after the marine police were informed of the presence of possible foreign fishing vessels in the waters off Mersing.

“A marine police patrol boat from our tactical base in Pengerang, which was on Ops Gelora patrol, rushed to the scene at about 8 pm and found the two vessels operating in the area, which was about 14 nautical miles to the south east of Pulau Tinggi.

“Our boat immediately ordered the two vessels to stop but they tried to run by cutting their nets. After a 20 minute chase, we manage to stop the two vessels and detained the fishermen on board,” said Khiu.

He said the 28 fishermen were all Vietnam nationals aged between 17 and 59 and the vessels were also registered in Vietnam.
