The Governments of Spain and Guinea-Bissau signed an extension of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries to enhance the cooperation in fisheries and aquiculture issues.

This document dating back to 2008 had been extended in 2010, and the deadline would expire on 31 December this year.

The main objective of this MoU is to strengthen relations between sector fisheries and aquaculture institutions of the two countries to contribute to the sustainable development and improve the efficiency of producers.

The parties agreed to promote cooperation to develop the fisheries-aquaculture sector in Guinea-Bissau, with special emphasis on the promotion of food security and the fight against poverty.

They have also undertaken to support technological exchange through training programmes, joint participation in research projects, development and production boost and the sustainable management of the environment as well as responsible fishing.

Furthermore, they will promote trade and private investment through specialized missions. This is expected to encourage the participation of fishing and aquaculture companies in trade events and exhibitions in both countries, and the organization of exchange of professionals to be trained in the evaluation of fishery resources.

Following the signing of the Memorandum, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA), Andres Hermida; and Secretary of State for Fisheries of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Ildefonso Barros, attended a meeting in which the fisheries agreement between the European Union (EU) and Guinea-Bissau was addressed. The renewal of this agreement had been suspended due to the coup d’état in Guinea-Bissau in 2012.

Besides, in this meeting the possibility of programming some cooperative actions, such as an assessment survey of demersal resources in the exclusive economic zone of the African country, which would perform the research vessel Vizconde de Eza, belonging to the General Fisheries Secretariat of Spain.
