December 10 is a day to commemorate the rights that all human beings are entitled to.

The world celebrates Human Rights Day every December 10, honoring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which enshrines the global rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the UDHR’s 30 articles December 10, 1948, which include rights such as:

– the right to life, liberty and security of person
– slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms
– no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment…
– no one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile
– everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state, everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country

But the world is still very far away from realizing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. While international treaties, human rights instruments and governments have incorporated many aspects of the UDHR’s 30 Articles, many are applied selectively or not applied at all. Below are videos from across the America’s the illustrate how some countries still experience basic human rights violations, and which point to the kinds of social and material transformations that are required to overcome the human rights violations that still exist today.
