The US Coast Guard has released footage showing the rescue of dozens of fishermen from a vessel that caught fire in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Reports say 37 stranded crew members were saved thanks to coordinated help from a local fishing boat and the Coast Guard, the latter of which dropped smoke flares and water from the air.

The 70m commercial vessel Glory Pacific No 8 caught fire in a remote location around 2,071 miles south-west of Hawaii. It is unclear how the blaze was started.

The crew reportedly managed to abandon the burning with two skiffs and several life rafts.
