The National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) will mark the World Fisheries Day on November 21, and the theme for this year is ‘Protect the Marine Ecology and Coastal Environment’.

The NFF national conference will be held in Visakhapatnam December on 19 and 20, and delegates from nine coastal states and two Union territories are expected to attend.

Fishing communities are concerned about the manner in which marine and coastal resources are being destroyed by industrial pollution, sewage and plastic waste of the urban regions, a statement from NFF said.

They have called upon fishing organisations, fisher community panchayats, and other civil society organizations interested in protecting the sea and coast to hold public meetings and other activities on November 21 to spread awareness about protecting the coast and sea.

The forum has also paid homage to Ossie Fernandes, director of Human Rights Advocacy and Research Foundation, Chennai, Jegannath Tandel, father of RK Tandel, member of NFF, Subash Arjun Tare, MD of Sathpadi fishermen Sarvodhaya Sahakadi Society, Juju Dakhi of Arnala fishermen community, Maharashtra, and Dr V S Somoshi, retired director general of Fisheries Survey of India, who passed away recently.
