This Guidance on addressing child labour in fisheries and aquaculture provides an overview of information on child labour in fisheries and aquaculture and of the international legal and policy frameworks. In fisheries and aquaculture, children engage in a wide variety of work in direct production (fishing and harvesting) and in associated activities such as fish processing and marketing, boatbuilding and net mending. Child labour is particularly common in family and small-scale operations and is closely linked to poverty and social injustices, therefore it needs to be addressed holistically. The publication provides guidance to governments, organizations of fishers, fish farmers, fish workers and employers and other sectoral institutions and development partners on important considerations and actions, including awareness raising, participatory approaches and community engagement, to effectively address child labour.
