The heat is on at the Sydney Fish Market, with thermal imaging showing as many as 80,000 customers have chosen to stock up for Christmas over the past 36 hours.
General manager Bryan Skepper says he is confident that the market will have served 100,000 customers by close of business on Tuesday.
Using thermal imagery on the shop floor, Mr Skepper says 80,000 shoppers have been to the fish markets over the past 36 hours.
“We’re pretty confident we will reach 100,000 people by the end of the day,” Mr Skepper told AAP.
“Yesterday afternoon the number of customers visiting the store dropped off because of the heat.
“As the cool breeze came through, we saw an increase in numbers.”
Despite the rush, Mr Skepper said customers were calm and in good spirits.
Local sustainable seafood products include mullet, bream, whiting, flathead, kingfish, a variety of oysters, prawns, crabs, and rock lobsters.
The Sydney Fish Market stays open until 5pm (AEDT) on Tuesday.
