Two Italian marines who were arrested 10 months ago for shooting dead two Indian fishermen flew home Saturday on reprieve for Christmas, reported Press Trust of India.

The duo, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, left early Saturday morning on a plane chartered by the Italian government from Kochi, southern India, where they were jailed.

They secured their passports from a local court Friday after submitting an unconditional joint undertaking to return to India on Jan. 10 to appear before a trial court. The Italians also executed 60 million rupees (1.1 million U.S. dollars) bank guarantee.

The marines were arrested in February after they shot dead two Indian fishermen they mistook as pirates off the southern Indian coast.
