The turnover recorded by fishery products processing enterprises in Andalusia reached a figure of around EUR 250 million in 2012, an increase of 2.5 per cent over what had been invoiced in 2011.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment of the Autonomous Government of Andalusia, this activity accounts for more than 52 per cent of the volume traded in Andalusia.

In the field of fishing product processing, the generation of new jobs continued on the rise: they were 1,960 throughout last year.

About 42 companies are those making up the Andalusian business network, specializing in fish catches processing, that is to say, those industries in which more than 50 per cent of the turnover derives from processing and preserving fish, crustaceans and molluscs.

Among the provinces, Cadiz stands out — in the first place — with 17 companies. It is followed by Huelva (with 10 Industries), Malaga (5), Seville (5), Cordova (2) and, finally, with one firm each: Jaén, Granada and Almería.

With respect to foreign sales of processed fishery products, in 2012 Andalusian exports experienced an increase of 19 per cent compared to 2011, reaching EUR 34 million.

The preparation and preservation of fish, caviar and their substitutes prepared from fish eggs is the most representative item among those destined to other countries, as in 2012 it concentrated 39 per cent of the total turnover of the Andalusian fisheries exports (14 per cent more than in 2011).

Meanwhile, among the different types of products the growth of salted fish is highlighted: 12 per cent more than last year.

The smoked and salted products account for 40 per cent of total turnover in 2012 of processed products from the sea, followed by canned products (about 31 per cent); frozen goods (17 per cent); semi-prepared products (6 per cent); prepared ones (4 per cent); and fishmeal (1 per cent), reported the autonomous government of Andalusia.
