Steep prices of different varieties of fishes is taking a toll on consumers at Nimbutala in Middle Andaman. Without an official notification on price fixation fish vendors in the region are reportedly charging exorbitantly from consumers. Despite considerable catch, retail fish vendors in the area reportedly trade the commodity at excessive prices, at occasions, even more than the prices in mainland. “Prices of fish have been on the rise for the past many months. The locals here are used to consume fish on a daily basis. But with the soaring prices, many have turned vegetarians in the last few days. Fishers secure massive catch on a daily basis and prefer to sell them to exporters and only lower quality fishes are made available to vendors here, who sell it at higher prices. A ceiling rate of various varieties of fishes should be fixed and fish vendors should be instructed to strictly abide by the rates, said some Nimbutala residents.
