The fishermen community of Campbell Bay, Great Nicobar on 18 September in the morning hours informed the Coast Guard about a fishing boat which did not return back to Campbell Bay even on the fourth day. Soon the Coast Guard and the police swung into action and launched search operation for the missing boat with four persons onboard. The crew of the boat were returning to Campbell Bay in another boat when the coast guard found them near Campbell Bay. All the four crew were safely escorted to Campbell Bay by the Coast Guard. The crew after arriving at Campbell Bay informed Andaman Sheekha that they had gone to the Mithakhari area in Great Nicobar Island for fishing and after reaching the decided spot, they laid their fishing nets and then cooked their meals on the beach and were resting and at about 5 Pm six foreign nationals (Poachers) which they claim to be Burmeese came out of the forest and they were armed with some sharp weapons. The Burmeese men tied these fishermen on trees and left with their boats. The fishermen also saw these Burmeese men abandoning their boat in the mid sea and they saw a black coloured large sized boat in which these Burmeese men escaped. The fishermen anyhow untied themselves from the trees and then two of them rushed to the nearby village to get help to recover their boat still in mid sea. However they could only get help the next morning as the experienced Nicobaree Villagers refused to venture into sea at night. The next morning the two fishermen returned back to the spot to meet the other two fishermen who were waiting near the shore and tracking their boat in the sea. With the help of nicobaree villagers they tried recovering their boats which had sunk by the time it was morning but they did not succeed. The fishermen then moved to the nearby village to find another boat to reach Campbell Bay the Nicobareese helped them reach another nearby village in their boat where they took the help of Mr. Kotesh, a Contactor who is also from fishermen community to find a boat to reach Campbell Bay. While talking to Andaman Sheekha Mr. U Sitaram a resident of Fishermen Colony and fishermen himself informed us that this is not the first time such a thing is happening last year also the same kind of incident occurred but the Coast Guard here at Campbell Bay is not serious about patrolling. They just venture into the seas in their boat and come straight back to Campbell Bay. The Coast Guard will have to land on the remote shores to track the foreign miscreants as they are masters in art of hiding. Further Mr. Sitaram also requested the Coast Guard and the Indian Navy to regularly patrol the surroundings of the Island and also to land on the shores regularly to check on poaching. Mr. Venkat, Up-Pramukh requested the Indian Coast Guard and Navy to increase their patrolling activities as this kind of incident is very unfortunate where fishermen are being targeted by the poachers. The residents of the fishermen colony were fuming over the Indian Coast Guard as they thought they have failed in performing their duties. One of the fuming residents who asked for his name not to be mentioned said that the Coast Guard people just harass the poor fishermen when they venture out in sea for fishing by stopping them and asking for license and life jackets but fail to perform their primary job, he also informed us that there have been many cases when the Coast Guard personals have even beaten people when they could not produce license in sea for some reason.
