ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair, A&N Islands on the behest of Andaman and Nicobar Administration will organize a Stakeholders Meet for Development of Tuna Fisheries in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on July 8 at ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Kochi. The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has taken a bold step to develop the infrastructure for tuna fishing and processing to give a boost to the tuna fishing industry in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The meeting is intended to provide a platform to express the aspiration of the industrialists and entrepreneurs and to provide a congenial environment for the interested parties to invest in enterprises pertaining to enhancing tuna fishing in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and its associated value addition industries. The meeting will be attended by the Chief Secretary, Andaman and Nicobar Administration; Secretary (Fy), Andaman &Nicobar Administration; Directors and Scientists from ICAR-CIARI; ICAR-CIFT and ICAR-CMFRI and Officials from Department of Fisheries and Department of Industries, Andaman and Nicobar Administration and Regional Director, Fisheries Survey of India, Port Blair base and other stakeholders. The waters surrounding Andaman and Nicobar Islands are endowed with rich marine fishery resources with an estimate of 1.48 lakh tonnes of exploitable resources. As per the estimates by Fisheries Survey of India, the oceanic waters around Andaman and Nicobar Islands are rich fishing grounds for tuna and tuna like fishes, for which the projected exploitable potential is around 65,000 tonnes. The current level of exploitation is less than 1,000 tonnes per annum.
