Commercial cultivation of catfish has been attaining financial solvency to a good number of people in the district for the last five years. According to the Fisheries Department source around 0.2 million tonnes of catfish are being produced in all twelve upazilas of the area including colossal low lying haors and canals every season from 340 acres of water body. The farmers of the district are making over Tk 30 million each year paying production cost. The catfish variety was being declining from last decade from ponds, haor, canal, low lying water body and river due to excessive use of insecticides and pesticides alongside indiscriminate fishing, official sources said. They again said, rather, a major portion of the country’s fish demand is managed from these sources by cultivating catfish. Farmer Anowar Hossain, 45, at Paroil village under Adamdighi upazila said, he had started cultivating the indigenous catfish on his two acres of water body investing Tk 60 thousand last 2015 and made Tk 0.2 million of the year. He grows over 20 mound of catfish in this season spending Tk 30,000 and sold for Tk 0.35 million to the wholesaler. “There has been a virtual revolution in catfish farming in the ponds at Paroil, Bisha, Kalai, Chalkparoil, Abadpulur and Bashipur village of Adamdighi upazila in the fish farms of the district.” said farmer Shazahan Ali, 50, under Dupchanchia upazila. He said, “With fish farming having increased, over the past 10 years fish consumption has almost doubled as it has been a boon to the economy of those areas as well as to the economy of the country as a whole.” “To grow each KG of fresh catfish, we need to spend Tk 250 to 300 and each KG of the variety is being sold from Tk 500 to 700 in the local kitchen market.” said farmer Sanowar Hossai, 23, son of Hossain Ali at Paroil village under Adamdighi upazla. “Wholesalers from deferent district including Dhaka, Magura, Rangpur, and Jessore visit our locality to purchase the fish variety by Tk 16,000 to 20,000 each maund.” District fisheries officer Rawshon Ara said catfish production in the district is increasing gradually with the fisheries department for its high demand. The new farmers of the area are showing more interest to bring water body hoping for making huge profit, she added.
