Fishes worth Tk 16 million perished in Sylhet division following recent flash flood caused by waters rolling down from the upstream in the Indian state Meghalaya. The preliminarily reports received on flood damage from the districts on Sunday showed the early flash floods have badly hit the region, especially Sunamganj. In total 65,974 fish farmers were affected by the calamity as they had lost 119.75 tonnes of fishes in 19 upazilas of the four districts of the division. In Moulvibazar, 25 tonnes of fishes, worth Tk 3.0 million were damaged affecting 4,015 fish rearers. Some 21 tonnes of fishes, worth nearly Tk 4.2 million were damaged in three upazilas of Sylhet affecting 9,650 fish farmers. In Habiganj, 7864 fishermen of two upazilas are hit hard as they lost 24 tonnes of fishes, worth about Tk 1.8 million. The worst hit district, Sunnamganj had lost 49.75 tonnes of fishes, worth Tk 5.97 milliojn affecting 44,445 fish rearers. Divisional deputy director of the fisheries department Md Mosharraf Hossain said on Monday different initiatives have already been taken to overcome the situation. Senior officials from the department and the ministry had visited the areas.
