The dry river Padma is regaining her flow of life with the onset of the rainy season. Due to heavy rainfall at the upstream of the river for the last two weeks, the dried river bed has been filled with muddy water with floating water-hyacinth and other aquatic vegetation. Even, the fishermen have started to criss-cross the river with fishing nets by repairing their boats. It is learnt, the Ganges while flowing through West Bengal of India took the name Padma during its entrance point near Shibganj of Chapainawabganj district. Due to construction of the Farakka barrage at the upstream of India and diversion of water through the barrage, the vast riverbed of the Padma remained full of dry deposit of sand almost all over the year badly hampering our navigation, agriculture, fisheries and the entire environment. The natural environment beside hundreds of miles surrounding the river Padma remained disastrous all over the year excepting for nearly two months of monsoon. During the monsoon, there is a spec of flow of water is noticed through the river Padma due to rainfall at the upstream. But, the full flow of the river water with groaning sounds of huge waves is now only a reminiscence. According to a source of Water Development Board in Rajshahi, while the water level of the river Padma crossed 18.50 meter, it is regarded as Danger Mark. But, during last 15-year of time, the Padma water never crossed the danger mark. Only on September-19, 2003, the water level stood at 18.85 meter. However, the Padma water had touched 18.70 meter for a several hours on September-7,2013 while on August-18, 2016 it reached 18.41 metre. From after that level, the water level marked a fall abnormally and the river turned to widespread bed of sand with narrow flow of water dividing the river into several small rivulets by turning the water level at 7.9 metre during March of this year. Fishermen who used to earn their livelihood by fishing at the river Padma informed, most of them have changed their profession due to insufficient water at the river and absence of enough fish. However, failing to cope with new profession, some fishermen are still stick to their ancestral profession. Mokhlesur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board in Rajshahi informed, though the water level at the river Padma was increasing slowly, it is far below the level of corresponding last year. Due to very slow increase of water at the river, it is not being predicted whether the water level would cross the danger level this year. But, he said, since it is full monsoon now, it is unlikely that the water level will drop at present rather will continue to rise. Ashraful Haque, Officer-in-charge of Meteorology Department of Rajshahi informed, up to June 15 this year, there was sufficient rainfall at the upstream of the river Padma but the rain fall dropped aftermath. However, there was only 28.8 millimetre of rainfall in Rajshahi on last Friday evening. He hoped, there will be sufficient rainfall during the monsoon in Rajshahi as well.
