The long-awaited dredging work on the Titas River in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, was inaugurated on Saturday morning. RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, MP of Brahmanbaria-3 constituency, spoke at the inauguration as the chief guest. The dredging work is expected to revive the once mighty river and its navigability Obaidul told reporters. Local farmers and fishermen have expressed their happiness over the start of the river dredging work, saying that their lives will improve significantly once it is completed. According to Babul Chandra Shil, chief engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board in Comilla Zone, the combined expenditure for the dredging of the 90km-long river and its tributaries will amount to an estimated Tk119 crore. Dockyard & Engineering Works Limited, under the Bangladesh Navy, was awarded the contract for the dredging work. The project is being implemented by the Bangladesh Water Development Board he said. He added that the river dredging work is scheduled to be completed by June 2020.
