The Taiwanese government performed its third financial contribution to aid develop a Central American fisheries programme that will require a total investment of USD 2 million.

At the headquarters of the Central American Integration System (SICA), the Taiwanese ambassador in El Salvador, Andrea Lee, and the regional director of the Organization of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector of the Central American Isthmus (Ospesca), Mario Gonzalez, signed the document certifying the granted sum of money: USD 500,000.

The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in El Salvador, Victor Sanchez.

Since 2013, Taiwan has funded the Regional Project Implementation of Support to the Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy Performance, an initiative that seeks to benefit artisanal and industrial fishermen, and other sectors of aquaculture by offering management measures and technical assistance.

In the official statement, the SICA noted that the support from Taiwan will make it possible to strengthen “the institutional capacities of the SICA countries so as to boost the management for the sustainable use and assistance to fishermen, farmers and others involved in this sector value chain.”

It will also facilitate the development of new regional and international partnerships to improve the use of fisheries and aquaculture resources.

This programme is implemented by the SICA through Ospesca, an entity made up of public institutions in the fisheries sector in the countries of the region, agency EFE reported.

The SICA consists of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
