In order to establish closer relations and increase knowledge in fisheries and aquaculture of both countries, staff of the Academy of Fishery Sciences of China (CAFS) visited the facilities of the National Committee of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) in Mazatlan, Sinaloa.

In a joint meeting with staff of the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA) and the Academy of Fishery Sciences of China (CAFS), CONAPESCA head Mario Aguilar Sanchez, stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between Mexico and China in fisheries and aquaculture.

“Specifically, with regard to fisheries management, research and aquaculture boost, we believe it would be the three points that we should prioritize in the bilateral cooperation,” commented Commissioner Mario Aguilar, above all in species of interest, such as tilapia, shrimp and some other freshwater species like catfish and carp.

Aguilar Sánchez commented that this visit of the directors of the Academy of Fishery Sciences of China is a result of the meeting held in September last year in Mazatlan, with the ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Mexico, Xiaoqi Qiu, in which issues of common interest in fishing and aquaculture were discussed between the two countries.

The group of Chinese visitors that this time was in Mazatlan is made up of Mr. Zhang Xianliang, president of the Academy of Fishery Sciences of China (CAFS); Chen Xuezhong , director general senior researcher of the Institute of Fisheries Research East China Sea of the CAFS; Mr. Xu Hao, general manager senior researcher of the Institute of Fisheries, Machinery and Instruments of the CAFS; and Dr. Ma Zhuojun, associate director of the Investigation Division of International Cooperation of the CAFS.

As part of its visit to Mazatlan, the delegation toured Aquaculture Farm San Jorge, SA de CV, and Acuacultivos de Barron, in order to exchange experiences in shrimp farming. Besides, a visit was performed to the Centre for Food Research and Development, AC (ICAS).

During the meeting with officials of INAPESCA and CONAPESCA, Commissioner Aguilar Sánchez emphasized Mexico’s participation in international forums, in which at the time it was able to work with great harmony and in close contact with the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

For his part, INAPESCA deputy general director of Fisheries Research in the Pacific, Pedro Sierra Rodriguez, gave a presentation on fisheries and aquaculture research in Mexico.
