On behalf of the EU, the Council of Fisheries Ministers adopted a decision on the signing and provisional application of the fisheries protocols between the EU and the Republics of Cape Verde and of Madagascar, setting out the fishing opportunities and the financial contribution provided for by the fisheries partnership agreement (FPA) between the parties.

Both FPAs entered into force in 2007. The main objective of the new protocols to these FPAs is to define the fishing opportunities offered to EU vessels.

Following the negotiations, the EU signed a new protocol with Cape Verde on 28 August 2014, for a period of four years, since the previous protocol expired on 31 August 2014.

On the other hand, with Madagascar a new protocol was signed on 19 June, as the previous one expires on 31 December this year.

In order to allow EU vessels to carry on fishing activities, the new protocols should be applied from the date of their signature on a provisional basis, pending the completion of the procedures for their formal conclusion.

In addition to the signing and the provisional application of these two protocols, the Council adopted also a regulation concerning the allocation of fishing opportunities between the Member States.
