In its annual Congress that took place in city of Aalborg from 26 to 27 October, the Danish People’s Movement Party calls on the Danish government to stand firm in rejecting the fisheries agreement between the EU and Morocco, which includes the occupied Western Sahara, because the agreement is contrary to international law and jeopardizes the United Nations efforts for peace in Western Sahara, according to the POLISARIO representation in Denmark.
Western Sahara is a country that is partially occupied by Morocco, and where the United Nations is working to find a peaceful solution. As long as the country’s status has not been clarified the purchase of natural resources from Western Sahara is equal to receiving stolen goods, unless there is assurance that the payment for the purchase of natural resources in Western Sahara goes to the local population.
Therefore, EFTA countries – which include Norway and Iceland have kept Western Sahara out of agreements with Morocco. So has the United States.
However, in the EU the situation is different. For the sake of their own economic interests, the EU supported the Moroccan occupation through fisheries agreements with Morocco, which have allowed the EU to fish in Western Saharan waters.
Currently, the EU is on track to conclude a new fisheries agreement with Morocco.
If the agreement is approved in anyway – and against the Danish parliament vote for its approval, the People’s Movement demands from the Danish government to declare that the illegal EU agreement does not apply to Denmark.
It is worth mentioning that broad majority of Danish parliament has recently supported the stand of the Government to vote against the forthcoming EU-Morocco fisheries agreement that does not exclude Western Sahara waters.
