Seafood retail company, Congalsa, has become the first Spanish company to partner with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to ensure the ecological sustainability of its seafood supplies.

The partnership will involve assessments of the sustainability of the company’s seafood sources (both wild and from aquaculture), along with the creation of improvement projects to enhance environmental performance.

“We look forward to assuring sustainability for our company and for the seafood sector to guarantee that future generations will be able to maintain our business, said Luis Miguel Simarro, CEO of Congalsa.

Congalsa says its aim is to ensure that all of its seafood sources originate from approved, certified sources or from fisheries and farms engaged in improvement projects.

“We are very excited to be delivering this approach in Spain. The ecological sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture is of great concern to both ourselves and Congalsa, and together we can engage the whole supply chain in delivering real improvements, added Pedro Ferreiro of SFP.

Congalsa is Spain’s number one producer of pre-cooked, frozen seafood products and supplies both retail and food service.

SFP is a non-profit organisation that helps businesses implement policies for the responsible sourcing of seafood.
