The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA) is conducting the Oceanographic Survey “Groundfish 2015” with the aim of obtaining data on spatial distribution patterns and abundance index of benthic and demersal fauna. The hydrographic survey of the area and its influence on species will also be held.

The survey, which is conducted on the continental shelf of Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea, aboard the research vessel Miguel Oliver, combines bottom trawling sampling for species and sediment dredging for the characterization of the bottom and bathymetric probes for the water column data.

This study is part of a historical series that began in 1983 for the evaluation of fishery resources in the northern shelf of the Iberian Peninsula. The continuity of these surveys is in line with the commitments made in the European framework for the collection, management and release of data from the fisheries sector and the National Programme of Basic Information.

MAGRAMA stressed that, thanks to the collaboration agreement between the General Fisheries Secretariat and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), it is possible to make the most appropriate tools available to scientists for the purposes of the study. At the same time, resources are boosted for the benefit of both institutions in the framework of better management of fisheries policy.
