A team of designers led by professor Shashank Mehta at India’s National Institute of Design (NID) has developed a fishing cart for fisherwomen to carry fish easily to market while easing out their load.

NID developed the design after a proposal was put forward by the state government to help solve the health issues of fisherwomen. Gujarat has the longest coastline of over 1,600 kilometres and is one of the biggest hubs of fisheries in India. Approximately 1.5 lakh people are involved in fisheries business and over 40% of these are women. The fisherwomen carry loads of fish from the shore or ports to the nearest markets every day.
