Goa is slowly moving up in the fisheries sector, said union minister for agriculture, farmers’ welfare and fisheries, Radha Mohan Singh. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a fisheries meeting held in Panaji on Saturday. “During the meeting, We have analyzed what was happening in the fisheries sector in Goa. In the past three years, the annual production in marine and inland fisheries has increased. Also, traditional fishermen who were affected due to LED lights and fish light attractors being used by mechanized fishing vessels can now be relieved about the ban that has been imposed along the Indian coastline. This has been done in the interest of the traditional fishermen across the country,” he said.Congratulating the state government for the increase in marine and inland fish production over the past three years, Singh said, “I am confident that Goa is moving ahead in the fisheries sector, a fast-growing sector in India. Fishing is a source of income and employment to numerous of fishermen and fish farmers. The fisheries sector contributes significantly, to the tune of about 6.2% to the fish production figures of the world,” he said. Singh expressed confidence in the high market prices of fish dropping. “Prior to 2014, production was less, but since then it has increased. As production increases, prices will start dropping,” he added.
