Chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday stressed on the need to take effective measures to stop over exploitation of fishing resources, including use of chemical fertilizers for fish farming. Speaking after inaugurating the 21st edition of India International Seafood Show (IISS) at Margao on Saturday, Parrikar said, “Over exploitation of fish is an area that needs to be monitored carefully. In Goa we have banned fishing with LED lights so that over exploitation doesn’t take place.” The three-day biennial exposition is jointly organized by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), the nodal agency of the union ministry of commerce and industry, and the Seafood Export Association of India (SEAI). Pointing out the advances made by Andhra Pradesh in the area of white shrimp farming, Parrikar called upon the stakeholders “to pass on the knowledge to Goa as well.” “Another area of concern,” Parrikar said, “was the use of chemical fertilizers, which results in the wash-off of these chemicals into the sea thus increasing the nitrogen levels in sea water, thereby creating problems for healthy growth of fish. ”
