The National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) and Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) have welcomed Union agriculture minister, Radha Mohan Singh’s move to impose a ban on LED fishing and bull trawling within 200 nautical miles of territorial waters in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). GRE president Agnelo Rodrigues said that the ban is in the interest of traditional fishermen of the state. He also said that several species of diurnal and nocturnal fish would be destroyed as the use of LED lights would have adversely affected the ecology. He further said that the fishing fraternity should work towards sustainable fishing as several hundreds species are already extinct. “If we continue with such destructive methods, fish will go extinct within 5years,” he added. GRE also urge the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Fisheries Minister Vinod Palyencar and to immediately release the petrol subsidy saying the delay “is hampering our traditional livelihood.”
