The All Goa Small Scale Responsible Fisheries Union has escalated concerns over alleged illegal mechanised fishing activities in the Zuari river. In letters addressed to the Coastal Security Superintendent of Police (SP) and Fisheries Director, the union raised grievances regarding the handling of their complaints. Copies of these letters were also forwarded to the Chief Justice of the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court and the Police Inspector of the Harbour Coastal Security Police Station.

The union, in response to a call letter from the Harbour Coastal Security Police Station, reiterated complaints lodged on February 1 and February 22, 2024. They also provided evidence of violations of a Goa Bench of Bombay High Court order dated January 9, 2024, in connection with the writ petition they had filed. The union expressed dissatisfaction with the response from authorities and highlighted discrepancies in handling their complaints.

They further referred to recent directions from the Harbour Coastal Security Police Station, which they found objectionable, citing legal obligations and court orders aimed at preventing mechanised fishing within five kilometres of the shore. The union asserted their refusal to attend any meetings with those involved in mechanised fishing within the specified area, due to ongoing litigation.

Furthermore, the union expressed willingness to participate in policy discussions regarding preventive measures, suggesting involvement of the Advocate General’s (AG) office and relevant authorities. The letter, signed by President Shaila D’mello and Secretary Laximan Mangueshkar, urged authorities to take necessary actions and keep them informed.
