Five sheds at Calangute beach caught fire on Sunday night, damaging fishing supplies stored there. The loss has been estimated at 7 lakh. Sources said that the fire started after a firecracker landed on one of the sheds on the beach at Mudda vaddo at around 8.45pm on Sunday, though some said the fire could have been sparked due to business rivalry. The flames soon spread to neighbouring sheds containing fishing boats and nets. Two fishing boats belonging to Ascuncao Fernandes were destroyed. Narrow roads made it difficult for the firefighters from the Pilerne, Mapusa and Panaji fire stations to access the spot, but the teams managed to douse the flames. Calangute panchayat has announced compensation of 25,000 to each of the shed owners.
