Accusing the State government for selectively targeting traditional fishermen community from Baina with the hidden agenda of fulfilling ambitious Sagarmala project by Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) at Baina coast, the joint general secretary of Goenchea Ramponkaranchea Ekvott (GRE), Olencio Simoes on Thursday questioned the State government as to why other CRZ violations including by started hotels in Goa is being ignored. “We truly feel that the State government has been selectively targeting fishermen community from Baina. Though there are 800-odd cases of CRZ violations before GCZMA, but till date no action has been taken. However, when it comes to Baina, GCZMA becomes extra active. Why they (GCZMA) failed to act against five star resorts in Goa which are also violating CRZ norms? Simoes said during a press briefing at the Baina demolition site, on Thursday. “They (the government) want to displace fishermen; they don’t want fishermen to do fishing from here, because they have vested interest. If the fishermen continue to operate from here, then, their ambitious Sagarmala project may face obstacle. The government and MPT are hand in gloves, because government wants to give Baina coast to MPT which in turn will construct berths at Baina coast under Sagarmala project and the same will be given to Adani and Jindal for coal handling, Simoes alleged. He said that instead of constituting district coastal committees and notifying fishing villages that could have protected the rights of the fishermen, the government has been taking action only against the fishermen. “If the government is really serious about demolishing all illegal houses, then, 60 percent of Goan houses will be demolished because none of them have permissions. Also, if we recall then as per special rehabilitation scheme 2006 the government had proposed special rehabilitation scheme for the Baina fishermen community but failed to fulfill its promise, he said. Simoes warned that if in near future any more demolition takes place at Baina, then, the traditional fishermen will not keep quiet and will come out on streets.
