Following directions from the Collector South Goa, the office of Mormugao Mamlatdar on Wednesday kick started the process of verifying whether all 68 people who have submitted memorandum for rehabilitation before the government are fishermen or not and whether their structures have existed prior to 1991. On June 2, the Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) along with members of Baina Ramponkar and Fishing Canoe Owners’ Society submitted a memorandum to Mormugao MLA Milind Naik seeking his intervention to save their structures from demolition by Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA). They had also demanded from Naik to request the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to rehabilitate traditional fisherman community people from Katem Baina as their structures existed prior to the enactment of the CRZ regulations in 1991/2011 and as per the CRZ Act. Naik recently met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and asked him to look into the matter. Parrikar later directed South Goa Collector Swapnil Naik to identity whether the people seeking rehabilitation or regularisation are fishermen or not and whether the structures owned by these families has been existing prior to 1991 or not as claimed by the people in their memorandum. “Today the officials appointed by Mormugao Mamlatdar had started the process of identifying all those 68 people who have claimed to be traditional fishermen. Even in the past the authorities concerned have given them enough time by giving personal hearing to prove with relevant documents whether their structures exists prior to 1991 or not, however they could not prove the same. Now as they have again given a representation, Parrikar instructed the Collector to verify whether the claims made by the people are genuine or not, Naik told Herald. Meanwhile, the officers deputed by Mormugao Mamlatdar on Wednesday met the members of Baina Ramponkar and Fishing Canoe Owners’ Society in their office located at Katem Baina and asked them to produce all relevant documents which proves that they are fishermen and their structures exists prior to 1991. “After we met the members of Baina Ramponkar and Fishing Canoe Owners’ Society to inform them about the decision of government, they sought two days time to provide all documents to us and after verifying the same we will send the report to the state government, an official from the Mamlatdar office told Herald. Speaking to reporters, the members of Baina Ramponkar and Fishing Canoe Owners’ Society claimed that all 68 traditional fishermen from Katem Baina posses relevant documents to prove that they are fishermen and have been living at Katem Baina prior to 1991.
