Fisheries Department today has proposed to establish enforcement wing to curb illegal activities in the state. Earlier GFP Chief Vijai Sardesai on 1st Oct 2024 had written to Chief Secretary demanding to have enforcement mechanism to curb illegal fishing activities.
Traditional fisherman have expressed alarm about boats from Malpe accessing our seas. The Coastal Police will keep a continuous watch. Halarnkar stated, “Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has issued strong directives to stop illegal fishing.” “Boats from outside enter, fish, and then run,” he continued.
In order to prevent more fishermen’s complaints, Minister said that he has made the decision to secure the coastline between Chapora and Canacona. Fishing in Goa’s territorial seas can result in arrest, fines of up to Rs 10 lakh, and boat seizures, according to a recent statement by the chief minister.
Halarnkar also said that Goans will have to protect livelihood of Goan fisherman. Acknowledging the severity of the issue, Halarnkar emphasised that the government has taken a multi-pronged approach to address the challenge.
“We have sanctioned an enforcement team comprising one deputy director, two superintendents, and two police officials. This team will conduct raids and intercept outstation boats illegally entering our waters,” the minister announced. He also confirmed that the enforcement team would be equipped with adequate resources and infrastructure to carry out their duties effectively.
