In what will be good news for traditional fishermen in the Mormugao constituency, traditional fishing associations at Baina and Desterro will soon get a dedicated space for their boats along the Baina shoreline.

Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar and the fisheries department on Monday morning carried out a joint inspection and identified two sites that would be dedicated for parking of canoes in the monsoons. Speaking to the media after a joint inspection with the fisheries director and traditional fishermen, Amonkar said a dedicated parking space to park as many as 500 canoes would be made available for traditional fishermen in the area.

“Traditional fishermen had a lot of issues and I had been continuously following up with the fisheries department to address their grievances. The fisheries director has arrived today and we have carried out a joint inspection to address the pending issues like the need for a net bending shed, fishing ramp, auction hall and repair yard in the area.

“As of now we have travelled across the Baina shoreline and we have identified a place behind the Baina sewerage plant where we will have a parking lot for around 500 canoes through the WRD department by construction of a retaining wall and dredging of around 3 metres. “The fishermen earlier had to move to other places like Kharewada, Hollant and Velsao to park their canoes during rains which sometimes would lead to minor clashes and this will now be a thing of the past,” said Amonkar.

The MLA said they had carried out a joint inspection, identified the spot and work will soon be tendered through the WRD department. “We are trying to finish the work ahead of the next monsoons. With one major issue resolved, we will soon have separate sites at Baina and Desterro to have separate areas for net bending sheds, ramps and other facilities of boat repairing yards as well,” said Amonkar.
