Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will table a proposal in the Cabinet this Friday on the formation of a high-level committee involving five key ministries to address the challenges faced by fishermen nationwide.

Zahid said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, Finance Ministry, Home Affairs Ministry, Entrepreneurship and Cooperatives Development Ministry, and Economy Ministry are expected to be part of the coordination effort to help fishermen.

Chairing the committee himself, Zahid said its formation aims to find solutions to various issues raised during engagement sessions across five zones.

“While some challenges vary by locality, many share fundamental similarities that require coordinated policy responses.

“I will propose to the Cabinet this Friday that this high-level committee be established, involving these five ministries to ensure a structured approach to solving fishermen’s problems,” he said.

On the issue of diesel subsidy targeting, Zahid said the government has yet to finalise its approach.

“However, officials have assured that any adjustments will not compromise the government’s responsibility to support fishermen.

“Instead, a dedicated scheme is being explored to replace direct fuel subsidies with welfare assistance and broader community benefits,” he said.

Zahid also proposed potential improvements to the RM300 monthly cost of living allowance scheme and suggested enhancing it based on catch volume.

“The goal is to encourage fishermen to bring more fish to market rather than selling at sea,” he said.
