Trout fish farmer Tot Ram of Kullu district has been rated among the five best progressive trout fish farmers of the country. On the occasion of National Fish Farmer Day, Tot Ram was felicitated by the Directorate of Cold Water Fisheries Research, Bhimtal.

According to the Director of state Fisheries Department, Vivek Chandel, Tot Ram has been associated with trout fishing for the last 20 years. He also rears trout fish fingerlings and has built 15 trout raceways and a hatchery with the help of the department. At present, Tot Ram is producing about 15 MT fish and 4.5 lakh trout ova at his farm.

“Himachal Pradesh is a leading state in trout production and ranks first in trout production in the private sector. At present, there are as many as 742 trout fish farmers in Himachal Pradesh, who produce about 1,400 MT trout fish,” said Chandel.

National Fish Farmer Day is celebrated every year on July 10 and the leading fish farmers of the country are honoured. This time the programme was organised at Directorate of Cold Water Fisheries Research, Bhimtal.

Chandel highlighted that it was a matter of pride for the state that Kullu’s Tot Ram has been ranked among the five best farmers of the country. Chandel added that to adopt new technologies, a memorandum of understanding would be signed with the Directorate of Cold Water Fisheries Research.
