Leaders of Rajshahi Rakhsha Sangram Parishad (RRSP), a forum for realisation of popular demands of people of Rajshahi, have expressed ovation towards Indian Hydrology experts who recently visited the project sites of the Ganges Barrage in Rajshahi. A team of RRSP also handed over a memorandum to the Assistant Indian High Commissioner of Rajshahi demanding a speedy implementation of the Ganges Barrage Project. RRSP leaders in the memorandum expected, with Indian co-operation the long awaited Ganges Barrage Project will be completed soon. Assistant Indian High Commissioner Abhijit Chattopadhyay welcomed the members of RRSP and said the proposed Ganges Barrage Project is on the way of implementation. Already the Indian hydrology experts have visited the project site and they assured, from next year the Indian hydrology experts will start working at the project. Abhijit Chattopadhyay further mentioned, to cement further ties of friendship between Bangladesh and India, both countries should work unitedly and intimately so that brotherly relation between the countries is strengthens further. Jamat Khan, General Secretary of RRSP demanded to the Indian Assistant High Commissioner to take step to form unity among social organisations of both countries. The High Commissioner expressed his willingness in this connection. The RRSP team was attended, among others, by Advisory Committee member of RRSP Younus Ali, Professor Shanto Kumar Majumder, Executive Member Nizam Uddin and former Vice Chairman of Nachole Upazila Abu Taher Khokon. RRSP memorandum further hoped, the sharing of Ganges water in accordance with the water sharing treaty with India and Bangladesh should be ensured. In connection with the Ganges Barrage Project implementation, the memorandum mentioned, Water Development Board under the Ministry of Water Resource of Bangladesh has been implementing the Ganges Barrage Project with is supposed to be completed by 2022. The memorandum demanded to complete the works of GBP within the time specified. A huge change in livelihood as well as economy of the region will be noticed with the implementation of the Ganges Barrage Project. It will usher a new horizon of development by creating employment, upgrading status of livelihood and social development of one third of total population of the country. The livelihood scenario of people of greater Rajshahi, Greater Kushtia, Faridpur, Jessore, Khulna, Barishal and Pabna will be changed through implementation of the project. Some 19 lakh hectares of farmland will be brought under irrigation ensuring self-reliance in food production and increasing perennial water flow in the rivers linking Ganges and the salinity of water will be decreased. Based on GBP, hydro-power projects will also be implemented, the biodiversity and forest resource of the Sunderbans will be saved and the fisheries industry will also boom. The eight-member Indian team who visited Ganges Barrage project area belonged to Director of Central Water Commission and Chief Engineer Bhupal Singh, Secretary of Irrigation and Water Ways Department Nabin Prokash, Commissioner of Water Resources Ministry J Chandrashekhar Ayire, Director of Central Water Commission (Hydrology) N.N. Roy, Director of Central Water Commission RR Samvira, Executive Director of WOAPCOS Limited Anupam Mishra, First Secretary( Political) of Indian High Commission on Dhaka Ninad S Deshpandey and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mini Kumam. Meanwhile, an 11-member Bangladesh team of Water Development Board was headed by Additional Director General of Water Development Board Abdul Hye Baki.
