India has taken a progressive step towards modernising its fisheries sector with the launch of a new programme integrating drone technology. Inaugurated by Chief Minister of Indian state Bihar Nitish Kumar, alongside Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinhai, the event marked a significant milestone in advancing fish farming methods. Nitish Kumar, addressing the event, praised the central government’s support and emphasised how drone technology would revolutionise fish farming operations. Since 2008, Bihar has focused on agricultural advancements, creating agricultural roadmaps that have increased the state’s productivity and reputation both nationally and internationally. According to Kumar, fish production has risen from 2 lakh metric tonnes in 2005 to over 8 lakh metric tonnes today. Bihar, once an importer of fish, is now exporting it to other states.
The introduction of drone technology marks a significant innovation, further enhancing agricultural efficiency. The government’s plan includes sending farmers to different states for training, enabling them to adopt new technologies and increase production.
With the fourth agricultural roadmap set to launch in 2024, Bihar is looking to strengthen its position as a leader in agricultural innovation, with the drone programme being a key part of this initiative. The state’s emphasis on collaboration, modernisation, and training promises a bright future for its fisheries and agricultural sectors.
