Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) today announced its Fisheries Awards for this year.

This is the second time the university is declaring the awards that are bestowed on individuals for their outstanding performance in different fields in the fisheries sector.

P A Muhammed Ali from nearby Njarakkal, who has been engaged in traditional fishing for the past 35 years, has been selected as the Best Traditional Fisherman, a varsity press release said.

The Best Innovative Fish Farmer is K J Andrews, who brought success in scientific farming of shrimps and fish. Andrews, who hails from Varappuzha, Ernakulam, popularized farming practices of shrimps in the district.

Syam K U, who compelted his fisheries degree with the highest marks last year, was adjudged as the Meritorious Fisheries Student.

The Best Fishery Educationist award went to Prof (Dr.) M J Sebastian, founder Dean of Fisheries College under Kerala Agricultural University, for his contribution to strengthening fisheries education in the State.

Dr K Devadasan, former Director of Central Institute of Fisheries Technology was selected for the Best Fishery Planner and Administrator Award. A renowned fish processing scientist, he modernized CIFT by introducing innovative methods.

Fisheries Minister K Babu will present the awards on the occasion of the World Fisheries Day celebration at KUFOS on November 21. As part of the celebration, a fisherfolk meet, a public rally, seminar and exhibition will be organized at the University.
