To encourage fish production in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, the state government will come up with a comprehensive fishery policy soon to accelerate growth in the sector, announced chief minister Naveen Patnaik at a workshop here.

Inaugurating the workshop, organized by state fisheries and animal resources development department here on Thursday, Naveen said the state has produced 4.67 lakh tonnes of fish during the last year (2014-15), which is an increase of 13 per cent over the previous period.

The seafood export growth rate was also 26 per cent during the year 2014-15.

The state fisheries department has drawn up strategies to double the fish production in next five years. The government aims to increase export of marine food product to Rs 10,000 crore by next five years (2019-20).

The department is also in the process of working out the procedure for certification and accreditation of fish seed hatcheries in the state, official sources said.
