The Labor Minister of Thailand has suggested the employment of released prisoners in the fisheries sector, offering them a chance to rehabilitate themselves in society, with the ATSME supporting the idea.

The Minister of Labour Gen. Surasak Kanjanarat stated that labor shortages in the fishing industry presented an opportunity to provide ex-prisoners with the task, allowing them to re-establish themselves back in society.

He said that most ex-prisoners are excluded from normal society even after serving their sentences. This makes it increasingly difficult for them to be reemployed.

Therefore, the Ministry is preparing to offer employment in the fisheries sector to well behaved prisoners nationwide who have almost completed the entire period of their incarceration.

He also mentioned that the Ministry has been contacted by many countries regarding the sending of foreign laborers to work in the fishing industry in Thailand, which the Ministry will now have to consider in thorough detail.

On the rehabilitation matter, the president of the Association for the promotion of Thai Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (ATSME) Penthip Pornchaded said that the Minister of Labor’s intention to provide employment opportunities to the inmates is a very good idea.

According to information from the Ministry of Justice, she said that there are about 300,000 people incarcerated, mostly as a result of criminal cases and they cannot easily find employment on their release. However, the ATSME believes that they can be trained to enhance their employability skills. – See more at: http://thainews.prd.go.th/centerweb/newsen/NewsDetail?NT01_NewsID=WNSOC5711160010026#sthash.D3Mrh5iL.dpuf
