This morning ships of the Israeli navy opened fire at fishermen in the coast of Gaza, in the south near Rafah. This attack constitutes a violation of the 72-hour ceasefire agreed by the Palestinian resistance and Israel.

Nizar Ayyash, spokesperson for the Gaza fishermen’s union, said that several Palestinian fishermen were near the shore when the warships opened fire against them with machine guns, reports Ma’an. No injuries have been reported.

The spokesperson added that the Israeli navy has been preventing fishermen from fishing even in the areas where they are allowed to.

The Israeli Occupation Forces claimed that a Palestinian motorboat drove out of the fishing limit and that they fired warning shot into the air in response. After the shooting the motorboat moved closer to the shore, informs Ma’an.

It is very common for Israeli warships to attack Palestinian fishermen in the shore of Gaza, even when they do not cross the fishing limit. The Palestinian delegation in Cairo negotiation for the ceasefire has demanded, among many other issues, for Israel to reduce the restrictions for the fishermen in the Gaza Strip.
