Maseno and Nagasaki University of Japan will on Monday launch a Sh136 million research project on Lake Victoria.

The project, Lake Victoria Comprehensive Research for Development, is as a result of a Memorandum of Understanding between Maseno and Nagasaki signed in 2013.

The comprehensive research will have four main components, Literature review and Aqua health, Water engineering, Fisheries and Capacity building.

Maseno University director of public relations Jaspher Otieno said.

In a statement, Otieno said Maseno will collaborate with other institutions including Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, Moi University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology and Centre for Research and Development.

The literature review and Aqua health component will involve review of literature, data analysis and compilation into a portal, survey and monitoring of aquatic ecosystem and water environments of Lake Victoria and its surroundings.

“The objective of the engineering component will be to develop the engineering aspects of bio-fence for water purification, water treatment and recycle systems. The fisheries component will focus on improvement of fisheries through enhanced controlled capture of fish and conservation of wild fish sources, the statement said.

The engineering component will also focus on aquaculture technology and post-harvest technologies in fisheries. The capacity building component will enhance the capacity of students and staff of the institutions.

Eight Master of Science students will be recruited for components one to three and supported in their research. Some students will visit Nagasaki University.

The guest of honour during the launch will be Environment Secretary Judy Wakhungu.
