Chilean authorities of the fishing area met in Tokyo with officials from the health and import sectors from Japan to present the changes introduced to the fisheries and aquaculture act in Chile and the new disease control standards for fishery products to be exported.

The official visit was joined by the head of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), Pablo Galilea; the national director of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca), Juan Luis Ansoleaga; and the Deputy Foreign Trade Director of Sernapesca, Cecilia Solís, among other authorities.

The meeting was led by the director general of the Department of Food Safety of Japan, Kasuya Shimura; and the head of the Department of Imported Food from the same entity, Hideshi Michino.

The Japanese officials highlighted good trade relations with Chile and the prestige of various Chilean foods imported by the Asian country.

Galilea thanked Japan for the good reception for the Chilean products, and invited the Japanese authorities to visit the South American country to sign a memorandum of understanding.

At the meeting, Sernapesca made a detailed presentation of the project Integrated Foreign Trade System (Sicex), an electronic platform that seeks to facilitate imports and exports.

In addition, Solís referred to the checks and inspections performed by Sernapesca to ensure the health status of fishery and aquaculture shipments abroad.

According to Ansoleaga, the Japanese authorities highlighted the improvement of control standards in Chile “and explained that their policies contemplate the conduction of audits to the countries of origin of the food sold in Japan, so we intend to visit Chile this year.”

The official emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with such an attractive market as the Japanese one and stressed the fact that the Japanese authorities indicated that 90 per cent of the imported salmon comes from Chile.

Sernapesca national director stressed the readiness between both parties to sign memorandums of understanding in order to improve the information flow to understand Japanese import policies and to learn about the sanitary control procedures performed by Chile for all its fishery products to be exported.
