All India Radio’s Mangaluru station has rolled out a new series titled ‘Jalasiri’ that will be broadcast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am to 10am. The broadcast will give listeners in general, and fisherfolk in particular, a peek into the schemes that the department of fisheries has for fishermen – both coastal and inland – along with tips on their roles in sustainable fishing, role of fisherwomen and a host of other topics. The first programme of the series aired on May 13 saw Ramachandra Bhat, retired faculty from College of Fisheries, Mangaluru, air his views on social empowerment of fisherwomen. A B H Suvarna Saliyan, president, Udupi Taluk Hasi Meenugarara Maratagarara Sangha, will interact with the listeners in the second episode on Monday. Vasanth Kumar Perla, programme head and assistant station director, AIR, Mangaluru, in association with K Ganesh, deputy director, department of fisheries, has chalked out the details. Sadananda Holla and T Shyamprasad, programme executives, have readied the details for 15 episodes of the programme. Officials from College of Fisheries, Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation will be among those who will participate in the series. Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Fish Marketing Federation and others will participate in the series.
