The University of Mysore (UoM) and the Karnataka State Co-operative Fisheries Federation Ltd are in logger heads over the fishing rights in the famous Kukkarahalli lake of the city. The University Syndicate has decided to cancel the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federation over fishing rights in the lake stating federation has breached the terms and conditions of the MoU while, federation denied any breach. In the year 2014, the UoM and the federation entered into an agreement over fishing rights in the Kukkarahalli lake which is owned and maintained by the university. As per the agreement, the UoM handed over the rights of fishing activities in the lake till 2019 to the federation. But three years later, recently highest decision making body of the University i.e. the University Syndicate decided to cancel this MoU. The reason attributed for this cancellation decision is that the federation has violated the MoU terms and condition by subleasing the fisheries activities. According to the sources, the University auditors have raised objection for this sub lasing decision of the Federation. Speaking to The Times of India, syndicate member M S S Kumar informed that as per the MoU, the federation was given fishing rights till 2019 in the lake. ‘But as they have subleased the activities which is against the MoU we have decided to cancel the MoU. The federation had also sought extension of the MoU period till 2020 stating there was no water in 2016. We have also declined for any extension of the period as we have decided to cancel the MoU itself,” he said. UoM registrar Bharati informed that as per the decision taken in the Syndicate meeting, we have issued notice to the federation. “There is an audit objection over violating the MoU. So we have issued notice based on the syndicate decision,” she said. But the Federation authorities have declined breaching the MoU terms and conditions and sent reply to the UoM on the Syndicate decision. Speaking to The Times of India, Karnataka State Co-operative Fisheries Federation Ltd Managing Director Chandrasekar informed that federation has not sub leased the fishing rights to any third party. “Generally we carry out fishing activities through our federation members. It is not subleasing. We follow this every where. We have written a letter to the UoM in this regard,” he said. He also informed that the federation has requested the UoM to consider its request for the extension of lease period by a year.
